An Open Letter to the Hillel Board

April 21st, 2007 · 5 Comments

Shlomo Bolts, Valedictorian of the Class of 2006, writes in:

To the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors:

I would like to believe that you have at heart the best interests of my good friends, the current students. I am very interested to see how the recent firings were in these interests, and how they mesh with your “blueprint for the future”. I would like to believe that you have the noblest of intentions.

However, while all of your recent statements address the reaction to the firings, none of the statements that you have released addresses the reason for the firings: why so many teachers, why all at once, why now? Your deafening silence on these critical questions speaks far louder than your words. It leads me to wonder if you are hiding something too shameful to be revealed.

This statement is not gossip. To the best of my knowledge, it raises honest and logical questions. Furthermore, this statement is not anonymous. I am sure that you all know who I am.

Last year, I opened my valedictory address by speaking of the tremendous value and strength of the Hillel community. This great community was not informed of the recent firings, and has been alternatively ignored and defied as sincere questions were raised over the past month. Based on my personal knowledge of the community’s value and strength, I urge you to reconsider. I am confident that the Hillel community, if consulted, will provide extremely valuable advice as we build toward the future. I am equally confident that, if you continue to defy the Hillel community, it is strong enough to defeat you.

I look forward to hearing your reply, and would be happy to help Hillel move forward in any way possible.

It’s touching to see former students who care so much. I hope we can all find a way– as a team with everyone in the school working together in an inclusive and open way–to move this process forward in a constructive, positive direction .

It will be interesting to see the response, if any.

….and is should further be noted…..

Parents are not withdrawing their children from Hillel as a result of this powerful, truthful website. Parents are taking such actions as they are unhappy with the manner in which the school is being administrated.

Truth be known. Parents want what is best for their children and if they have the perception or are unhappy with the product they look and move elsewhere. That is what is happening here. Pure and simple.

If the board was listening to the parent body then they would better understand why people are leaving. Perhaps Exit interviews should be conducted. Unless, of course, they don’t really want to know.

The website is not a scapegoat for the inadequacies of the individuals who are administrating the school and the board who oversees.

This is a statement of FACT!
