“Courageous Members of the Hillel Community” write in:
“COURAGE IS FIRE; BULLYING IS SMOKE!!”
WHY ALL THE SMOKE SCREENS????
This just in:
Some Board Members are now calling up teachers and threatening them personally!
They are telling them that they are forbidden to attend the June 6th Open Board Meeting unless they have children in the school and are permitted to vote!
Did anyone notice the word “OPEN” for Open Board Meeting — a meeting that should be open to all stakeholders, especially those who shape and mold our children’s lives on a daily basis, our teachers?
Dr. Levy and Dr. Zakon welcomed teachers’ presences at board meetings!! What exactly is the problem?
Is this board committed to opening channels of communication or to closing them?
What are they hiding?????
We already know–despite the fact that they told parents otherwise at the Dinner–that the school is in the red.
We already know that our teachers are miserable, harassed, and bullied all the time.
Why are they so afraid that parents should learn the truth?
Because now it is their necks on the line?
SHAME ON THOSE BOARD MEMBERS ENGAGING IN SUCH LOW BEHAVIOR.
YOU ARE NOT TRUE LEADERS.
HOW DARE YOU FURTHER INTIMIDATE OUR TEACHERS?????!!!!
OUR TEACHERS ARE PRECIOUS AND SHOULD BE CHERISHED NOT INTIMIDATED!
WE ARE CALLING UPON YOU TO CEASE IMMEDIATELY. DON’T TEST OUR PATIENCE. IT IS BEGINNING TO WEAR THIN.

Well it’s no wonder that these people approve of the administrators’ bullying of others…many of them are bullies themselves. Go figure! How sickening.

Teachers should call Channel 10 news already.

Channel 10 has been following this story.

How many teachers have been called? In what division do they work? Is this absolutely confirmed?
5 Anon // May 20, 2007 at 8:12 pm
This is absolutely confirmed but not sure of the numbers involved
6 Mindy // May 20, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Again, do you know which division?
7 anonymous // May 20, 2007 at 8:29 pm
The information provided is not concrete!
Please provide further details. Please disclose which board members are engaging in such activities.
It is time the community discovers who they really are and what they are really made of - if anything.
They must be exposed and we must take action to stop the bullying and to make sure all of the teachers are coming to the meeting.
These actions will not be tolerated.
Avi - are you aware?
The actions of this board are deceptive - they have been trained by the Head of School - it is a brainwashing - - and any one who has been at the school will tell you how staff act - -they are robotic at best - scripted, and quite distant. This is a very serious situation.
Please provide additional information.

Please either tell us the board members or the teachers. I would think the exposure of the board member at this point would be welcomed information on this site in advance of the upcoming meeting.
This type of evidence will certainly garner support for the new slate to be sent next week.
Please provide to help SAVE HILLEL!

I agree that that this information is not concrete. Please recall also that last week we heard Druin verbally approached teachers re: their attendance at the meeting. So let’s please try to confirm what we do know.
13 Anon // May 20, 2007 at 8:41 pm
My source is beyond credible and will not give that information at this time in order to protect those teachers
I can furnish the source to the new slate but not to everyone who reads the blog

This information is concrete. Don’t kid yourself.
15 Anon // May 20, 2007 at 8:42 pm
I am in touch with the new slate. I will make the information available to them and let them proceed from there.
16 Anon // May 20, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Only a few teachers that we know of were called at this time - - some elementary ; some high school; no middle school that we are aware of yet.
Any other teachers who were called are encouraged to let someone know as soon as possible. This is simply unacceptable.
17 anonymous // May 20, 2007 at 8:52 pm
It is not a matter of kidding ourselves. It is a matter of being able to mobilize and take action.
18 anonymous // May 20, 2007 at 8:53 pm
This type of behavior is abominable and cannot be tolerated.
19 Anon // May 20, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Agreed. I’m making the new slate aware ASAP.
20 Anon // May 20, 2007 at 8:56 pm
There are board members who do support open communication.
Teachers who have been bullied should show up to the meeting if they wish to. No one has the right to tell them otherwise.

“With the school year’s end fast approaching, we are pleased to continue to keep you informed of the exciting happenings at Hillel with this edition of the Blueprint to Excellence Update. Hillel’s strategic plan is our anchor in decision-making, and we are making strides everyday to achieve its goals.
Just as these updates foster an atmosphere of open communication, our upcoming Annual Meeting is a forum that allows us to share important information with Hillel families and further connects school members.
This meeting is called each year to pass the Board slate and to vote on and install the incoming Board of Governors. We encourage all school members to attend the 2007 Annual Meeting Wednesday, June 6, 7:30 PM, at Hillel.”
Blueprint to Excellence Update May 18, 2007
Is the Board now recinding this invitation to its teachers? Are teachers not school members?
22 anonymous // May 20, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Enough of us will be there that we cannot and will not allow anyone to be turned away.
It should certainly be an interesting evening. They are gearing up to make a full agenda in an attempt to not permit any questions, dialogue or opposition. Be prepared.
This will surely be an event NOT to miss.

TO THE HILLEL TEACHERS
I AM A TEACHER AT HILLEL AND I WILL BE AT THE JUNE 6th MEETING!
NOONE HAS TOLD ME PERSONALLY THAT I SHOULD NOT GO. AND, IF THEY DID, I WOULD STILL GO!!!
To the teachers: Many of us commiserate in secret behind closed doors; complain about the state of Hillel over lunch; give each other “the look” of dissatisfaction and misery as we pass each other in the halls; write anonymously on this site.
Let me pose these questions to you:
HOW MANY OF YOU ARE GOING TO SHOW UP ON JUNE 6th?
HOW MANY OF YOU ARE WILLING TO STAND TOGETHER AS A UNITED FRONT?
HOW MANY OF YOU ARE SCARED, BUT WILL DO IT ANYWAY?
You need to look deep in your hearts and souls. No one should tell you what to do, what the right decision is for you. All I ask you to do is think about what is right for you, for the children you teach, and for the survival of our school. Then, answer this question:
ARE YOU GOING TO THE MEETING ON JUNE 6th?
35 Mindy // May 20, 2007 at 10:00 pm
Anon #15: Thank-you for passing on the information to the new slate.

I intended to go to the June 6th meeting whether we were “invited” or not. However, after asking several people, I found out that teachers are more than welcome to attend. This was made very clear! So for those of you that have received phone calls, or gotten the impression that we are not welcome, please ignore those calls and/or feelings. Just our presence will send a signal that we are truly disturbed about the lack of respect that has been “delivered” to us during the last several months. Inattendance may send a signal that we just don’t care!

58 In all fairness... // May 22, 2007 at 10:03 am
No. The bylaws define school members as:
The members of the SCHOOL shall be the following persons:
1. Parents
Parents (i.e., legal guardians) in good standing of children enrolled as students in the SCHOOL shall be Members of the SCHOOL. “Good Standing” shall be defined as being current in the payment of contributions, having no past due financial obligations to the SCHOOL and/or having otherwise made accepted accommodations for the payment of such financial obligations.
2. Contributors
Any person who has contributed $1000 or more to the SCHOOL for each of the preceding three years and expresses in writing an interest in membership shall be a Member of the SCHOOL for the current year. Any parent who was a Member for the preceding year shall remain a Member for each succeeding year in which he/she has made a contribution of $1000 prior to January 1st.
3. Committee Members
Any member in good standing of a Standing or Special Committee as set forth in Section VIII shall be a Member of the SCHOOL for the current year.
Teachers do not fall under any of these 3 categories.
59 bambi // May 22, 2007 at 10:30 am
Why?
We work for the school and contribute to education of the children in a synergistic way that produces good well rounded people.
Some teachers have been there a long long time others not so long. What about ’sweat equity’?

No one is stoppping the teachers from coming to this meeting and I know the board members who want them there.

I agree that the teachers should be there. I am not a board member or a parent; as I have posted previously, I used to be involved in the school but I am not any more.
My only purpose in posting here is that the teachers should be able to make an informed decision. If there are risks, I believe they should take them. I believe that the benefits far outweigh the risks. But I also believe that you are doing a grave disservice to the teachers trying to paint a one-sided story.
They need to know the risks, and they need to decide on their own to face them. It is wrong to approach it any other way.

I’d like to once again offer my praise to the creator of this site. Without the communication that has taken place here, I never would have known that others share my feelings about the direction the school has taken. Over the past few years I’ve heard over and over that the move towards secularization was something the parents wanted. I had already decided to leave the school since this seemed to be the case. How wonderful to discover that so many other parents want our Jewish school back!!

TO “IN ALL FAIRNESS”:
If your aim is to scare the teachers about the June 6th meeting, PLEASE STOP! I would respectfully suggest you write on this site, according to the name you have given yourself. You are not doing that if you think your explanation of who can attend this meeting is FAIR. IT’S NOT! IN FACT, IT IS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE TO THE MISSION TEACHERS AND PARENTS HAVE, WHICH IS TO SAVE HILLEL!!!
TO MY FELLOW TEACHERS:
All we have to do is show up on June 6th. I agree that it doesn’t matter whether we’re invited or not; we just have to be there. I have personally spoken to a current board member who was in favor of teachers attending the meeting. We have had all HILLEL doors shut in our faces this entirely tragic year. If we don’t show up, we’re saying it’s OK to threaten us! Hey, just keep insulting and harassing us! Please keep silencing us; we give you permission. By showing up, just our presence alone is saying, “WE’RE HERE! WE CARE! YOU WILL NOT PUSH US AROUND ANYMORE! YOU WILL NOT FORCE US OUT! WE’RE OPENING THE WINDOW AND YELLING OUT, “ WE’RE FED UP AND WE WON’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!” We will be saying all this and we don’t even have to speak; we just have to be there and be seen.

There is nothing to fear but fear itself.
The Associate Head of School hasn’t a clue and even worse - has to feeling for our school. The whole administration lacks ruach. It doesn’t live within their neshama.
The Executive Board hasn’t a clue - - they are running a Jewish Day School not a fortune 500 company. If they had any tzechel - they would know those they are not synonymous!
Teachers, our school’s future lies within your hearts and capable hands. We need you and love you and welcome your support!!!
Please continue to speak with the parents - you are right - many are unaware and hearing it from you brings credence to our efforts.
We must all work together to make a difference. No man or woman is an island and it takes a village to raise a child. Our shtetl will achieve if we continue to work together in a constructive methodical way.

Post #78: Same reaction when I spoke to a parent….
85 Michael Newman // May 25, 2007 at 7:23 pm
I don’t believe teachers should merely attend the meeting. Teachers are the only ones with credibility with regard to telling parents what’s what. Teachers are the least likely to be biased, especially those that have been around for years. I believe that for this meeting to be successful, teachers must stand up and tell parents what is going on. Assuming that parents know can lead to failure. Those of us that do not work at the school and do not have everyday contact with it do not have the knowledge or credibility to move parents to vote off their friends. Only those with the information and without ulterior motives can do that. So, if teachers are so strong in their positions, they should not COMPLETELY rely on others to make their case for them.
If teachers were to just attend the meeting, how would uninformed parents know that they are there in support of the “alternative” slate as opposed to the one submitted by the current board? I fail to see the logic in this.
In conclusion, if you feel strongly about what is going on, it is time to draw a line in the sand. If the “alternative” slate is not successful on June 6th with all the support it seems to currently have, changes in the future will be exponentially far less likely. So, if you have something to say, say it. If you keep your mouth closed at the meeting and your position is not adopted, you have no right to complain. At least attempt to fight against what I keep hearing is such an oppressive, terrible, academic integrity lacking, unfair, not Jewish administration. If you remain silent, people will assume you support the current board and if that’s the case, good luck next year.

or inform parents behind the scenes starting now as to who it is teachers wish to see on that board
87 Michael Newman // May 25, 2007 at 7:51 pm
I do not think they could inform enough parents of their views in order to be assured the vote would be successful. Further, if a teacher tells a parent his/her point of view and that parent goes ahead and says something at the meeting on behalf of that teacher, what credibility does the speaking parent have to sway other parents? To succeed, I believe that teacher silence at the meeting will not be possible. Obviously everyone has the ability to choose what they want to do for themselves. This is just my opinion.

Michael:
Will teachers be allowed to speak?
If they are, you are 100% right!
Shabbat Shalom

A valid and interesting point.

I find it so interesting that Rabbi Druin called us all in to thank us for what a great job we’ve all been doing. Why now? Why did he never care to do that before? I guess the marketing firm must be giving him some tips. Too little, too late.

Druin is a puppet - - he has no gumption. He is not a leader. He has no heart in the school. He, as Holden, are cold blooded. They are out for themselves - to make themselves a name . They have no respect for our Teacher, Parents, or Students. It is unbelievable what the students think of them. Take a survey - - you will be amazed what these kids know!
Their (Holden’s and Druin’s) methods of ruling by intimidation are merely the tactics used to make themselves feel superior and in control.
Our teachers have had enough! In case no one noticed, Holden has disappeared from the campus for the last 2 weeks. No one seemed to know where he was or when he would be back.
Guess it is another one of his PAID vacations! It’s a shame our students are unable to go on field trips and our teachers need supplies…..but we had enough money for soundproofing, glass offices, new conference rooms, plasma tv’s, trips to Kansas, and let’s not forget the Marketing firm and new logo production etc…….
For sure this is how to run an educational institution???NOT!!!!!
Let’s get with the program, support our teachers and our students. Vote for change to restore and SAVE HILLEL!
